Trailhead:
- Molas Pass. 1/2 mile from parking lot at Molas Pass (look for wooden sign) on Highway 550 -- 5 miles south of Silverton.
- Molas Lake Campground. Take the Molas Lake Trail and meet the Colorado Trail 1.5 miles east of Molas Pass
- Elk Park. My favorite. Take the the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad (runs daily www.durangotrain.com ) and ask to be let out at Elk Park. Follow the Colorado trail signs.
- Stony Pass. 8 miles from Silverton on Country Road 2. This road requires a true 4x4 vehicle

Nearest town: Silverton, Colorado. Silverton is situated in the San Juan Mountains, nestled in a valley it is a hiker’s (and snow enthusiasts) paradise. Silverton lies 50 miles north of Durando (nearest airport) on highway 550. For a great experience take the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad (runs daily www.durangotrain.com )
The best section of the Colorado Trail -- hands down. There are too many highlights to mention.
