Difficulty: Strenuous. 19 miles, the majority of which is above treeline.

Trailhead:

  1. Molas Pass. 1/2 mile from parking lot at Molas Pass (look for wooden sign) on Highway 550 -- 5 miles south of Silverton.
  2. Molas Lake Campground. Take the Molas Lake Trail and meet the Colorado Trail 1.5 miles east of Molas Pass
  3. Elk Park. My favorite. Take the the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad (runs daily www.durangotrain.com ) and ask to be let out at Elk Park. Follow the Colorado trail signs.
  4. Stony Pass. 8 miles from Silverton on Country Road 2. This road requires a true 4x4 vehicle
